How file recovery works

Check your file for free. A prepared download, saved password or cloud password-search attempt costs $9.99 USD before tax. Learn what each payment covers.

1. Choose your locked file

Choose your file and we’ll check it on your device. Your original is not uploaded or changed. You don’t need an account, a payment card, or knowledge of how the file was locked.

The check is free. We’ll explain which options are available for that particular file. Some files aren’t supported, and a supported file is not a promise that its password can be found.

2. Review the result or search offer

If we can prepare an unlocked copy or read a saved password, we do that on your device first. You only pay if a result is ready and you choose to download it or reveal the password. Failed preparation costs nothing.

If we need to search for a forgotten password, we explain the price and limits before you pay. The search runs on our servers for up to five minutes after it starts. Waiting for it to start can add time. A long or random password may not be found.

Some older files can instead be searched on your own device. That can take days or longer, without a guarantee of success. These searches start only when you choose to run them. You can pause and download a progress file to continue later; progress is not saved automatically.

ZIP recovery needs a separate, unchanged copy of a file inside the locked ZIP, or a matching file inside another ZIP that opens without a password. For example, you might have a photo both inside the ZIP and saved separately. Not every copy will match. If you don’t have one, this ZIP method can’t help.

3. Decide whether to pay

  • An unlocked copy or saved password: $9.99 USD once it is ready, to download or reveal it.
  • A password search on our servers: $9.99 USD for one attempt, even if it finishes without finding the password. If a service failure prevents us from completing the search, you receive a full refund.

Tax may apply. There is no subscription. Each payment covers one file and the result or search you chose. We never charge for a second service automatically.

Secure payment opens in another tab. Keep your file tab open. An internet connection is needed to pay and confirm payment, even when the file is processed on your own device.

Save your result

Download the unlocked copy and check it in the app you normally use. Your original stays unchanged. Some methods return a copy without finding the original password. A password found by a search on our servers is checked locally against your original before we show it. A saved password read from an older Access database header is not independently verified; check it in Access.

Save your file or password before closing the tab. If you close or reload it, return in the same browser and choose your recent purchase. Select the same original file and any extra files again. You won’t need to pay again for the same result during its access period, but preparing it again can take time.

Paid downloads and saved passwords prepared on your device can be accessed again for seven days after payment. Passwords found by our servers are available for up to 72 hours after recovery. This browser can remember purchases for 30 days; clearing its cookies removes that access. Closing the tab does not stop a search on our servers—use the cancellation button and wait for confirmation.

Will my file be uploaded?

Your full file is never uploaded. Preparing an unlocked copy or reading a saved password keeps the file and result on your device. Payment uses a private reference to match the purchase to that file.

A password search on our servers sends the information needed to test possible passwords. We learn any password we find, and some supplied archive information may then become readable to us. The form lets you review what will be sent before you continue. Read the full privacy details.

Supported files and technical limits

Copies and saved passwords prepared on your device:

  • PDF printing/copying restrictions: supported Standard-encrypted revisions 2–6 that open without a password. Compressed object streams and some variants are refused.
  • Editing restrictions in readable DOCX/XLSX/PPTX and supported macro-enabled versions.
  • Some older Word and Excel files using XOR protection.
  • Saved passwords in Jet 3/4 MDB Access databases. Modern ACE/ACCDB encryption and user accounts are unsupported. Reading the password does not check or export tables.
  • Macro source code from supported readable VBA projects, including some older PowerPoint projects. Code is exported as text and never run; form resources and compiled code are not rebuilt.
  • Traditional ZipCrypto ZIPs with an exact unlocked original of an eligible stored member, or a reference ZIP with matching compressed member bytes. Matching decoded contents alone are insufficient. AES ZIP, ZIP64 and split archives are unsupported.
  • Full 40-bit searches for PDF revision 2 and Office 97 binary RC4 DOC/XLS. These can take days or longer and produce an unlocked copy, not the original password. Pause and explicitly save progress before closing the tab.

These inputs and extra files are limited to 16 MiB (about 16.8 MB). Expanded ZIP contents/output are limited to 64 MiB (about 67.1 MB) and 4,096 entries. ZIP recovery stops if the engine reports no progress for ten minutes; this is not a total search deadline. Other operations have format, time and memory limits. The longer 40-bit searches run in short chunks and can be paused. RAR and 7z content extraction are not supported.

Password searches on our servers: supported Standard-encrypted PDFs, Office Agile AES-256/SHA-512 files with a 16-byte salt and 100,000 iterations, and header-encrypted 7z with supported AES and Store/LZMA/LZMA2 header chains and checksums. PDF and Office checks accept files up to 64 MiB; 7z checks read limited parts of the archive. Availability depends on the exact protection and current service support.

Removing protection can invalidate digital signatures. Downloaded copies preserve embedded scripts, macros and attachments; they do not remove potentially harmful content. Check copies in your usual app before relying on them. These tools do not repair damaged files.
