Forgot a 7z password? What to do next

Check your 7z archive for free. A cloud password-search attempt costs $9.99 USD before tax, even if no password is found. Learn what to try first.

Check my file for free

Free file check. $9.99 USD for one cloud password-search attempt, even if no password is found. Tax may apply. No subscription.

Choose your locked 7z archive for a free check. Your original won’t be uploaded or changed. Llaves checks whether it supports a password-search attempt for that archive.

Some 7z files aren’t supported. You don’t need to know how yours was encrypted; the file check will tell you whether we can try a search.

Look for the password or original files first

  • Search the email or chat that came with the archive. The password may have been sent separately.
  • Check your password manager and saved notes using the filename, project or sender’s name.
  • Ask the sender for the password or an unlocked copy.
  • Look in backups and other folders for the original files. Finding those solves the immediate problem without recovering the archive password.

If you have a likely password, check capitalization and accidental spaces in your usual archive app.

What can a password search do?

It tests possible passwords. A long or random password may not be found. There is no guaranteed recovery time, and being able to search the archive does not mean we can promise success.

For background, 7-Zip’s format documentation describes how its encryption protects archives.

What does 7z password recovery cost?

Checking the archive is free. A search on our servers costs $9.99 USD before tax for one attempt lasting up to five minutes after it starts. Waiting for it to start can add time. There is no account or subscription requirement.

You pay even if the search finishes without finding the password. If a service failure prevents us from completing it, you receive a full refund. Read the purchase terms before paying.

What happens to my archive?

The full archive stays on your device. If you choose to continue, we send information needed to test passwords, including small encrypted parts of the archive’s file list. We learn any password we find and can then read those parts, which may reveal filenames. You can review what will be sent before continuing. Read the privacy details.

Keep the file tab open. If a password is found, your browser checks it against the original before showing it. Save the password and use it in your usual archive app.

Which 7z archives are supported?

This method supports header-encrypted 7z archives, where the file list is also protected. Archives with only encrypted file contents are unsupported. Supported headers use AES and Store, LZMA or LZMA2 chains with usable checksums, within the analyzer’s read and processing limits.

A file created with 7-Zip might instead be a ZIP or another format. AES ZIP and RAR are outside this server-search method. Some ZIPs can use the separate on-device recovery method if you have a matching unlocked file. Llaves does not extract 7z contents directly.

Renaming the file does not change its protection. The free check reads the actual file rather than relying on its extension.
